Need help relaxing during your appointment? Our application of sedation is safe and heavily monitored so you do not experience any unwanted side effects. Sedation can be extremely beneficial during certain procedures, and it can make receiving necessary dental treatment much easier.

There are several types of dental sedation available, and the type used typically depends upon the invasiveness of the procedure and the unique needs of each individual. The levels of sedation that we offer range from a slight relaxation effect, all the way to having the patient fall asleep entirely via IV-Sedation.

At McCaffrey Dental Group, the following types of dental sedation are provided:

  • Oral Sedation: A simple pill, oral sedation will provide a a mild to moderate level of sedation. This will help a patient relax and allow them to better handle any discomfort that they may experience during treatment. A patient will typically feel somewhat drowsy, but they should still be aware of what is happening around them.
  • IV Sedation: This method of sedation is injected into an individual’s vein as a way of providing moderate to high levels of sedation. The medication will go into effect very quickly, and our experts will be able to continually adjust it to provide the patient with the appropriate level of sedation. While the patient will most likely be conscious, they may not recognize their surroundings; however, they should return to normal shortly after.
  • General Anesthesia: When general anesthesia is provided, the goal is to have the patient fall asleep entirely. The patient will be unable to remember the procedure taking place, and they will not experience any pain during the process. With general anesthesia, our experts are able to conduct very extensive treatments without subjecting the patient to discomfort or pain. Afterwards, it may take a patient several hours to return to normal, and they will be required to have another party provide transportation.
  • Local Anesthesia: Used strictly for the management of pain, a local anesthetic is applied directly to the site of a dental procedure in order to provide the patient with a numbing effect. This will prevent pain and discomfort from occurring while work is being performed. While this type of sedation is typically great at dealing with pain, it will not actively reduce the patient’s anxiety in any sort of way; however, many patients feel better when a local anesthetic is used because it provides them with comfort in knowing that the treatment will be significantly less painful.
